State Library of Queensland Youth Writers Award 2009 Calling Young Writers

Queensland’s aspiring young writers are once again invited to submit their short stories for a chance to launch their literary careers and win a $2,000 cash prize.
Entries for the State Library of Queensland Young Writers Award 2009 open 18 May and State Librarian Lea Giles-Peters is asking a new generation of young writers to embrace this exciting opportunity.
‘I encourage all 18-15 year olds living in Queensland to dig deep into their creative minds and share the stories that are important to them and hopefully kick start an illustrious career in writing,’ Ms Giles-Peters said.
Now in its 14th year, the State Library of Queensland Young Writers Award has launched the careers of many young writers including Alisdair Duncan (Sushi Central), Christopher Currie (Dearly Departed) and recipient of the prestigious Rolex Mentor and Protégé Arts Initiative, Tara June Winch.
Simon Groth, who has been highly commended twice in the past, was short-listed for the 2008 Queensland Premier’s Literary Award, while the 2006 winner, James Halford, was published in a 2007 collection of bet Australian stories alongside Kate Grenville and David Malouf.
‘The winner will be announced at the annual Queensland Premier’s Literary Awards, along with the recipient of the $500 Maureen Donahoe Encouragement Award,’ said Ms Giles-Peters. ‘But the most exciting opportunity from these awards is the potential to uncover Queensland’s next great literary talent.’
